2. Our Story
Poverty Hill Wines is a boutique producer of premium wines from the Eden Valley. Our vineyards are predominately estate grown and dry grown to produce single varietal wines. Our wines are exceptional examples of regional and varietal definitions which contribute to create complex wines with an abundance of personality.
The name derives from a windswept, stone inhabited hill on one of our partner’s properties barren of any grass or such. It was the best we could come up with at the time and we think it is a name that is hard to forget!
Our winery began as a venture of four friends who joined together in 2002, each with decades of experience in the wine industry. We had a simple aim: to produce wines that were impeccable representations of the Eden Valley region.
“We wanted to create wines that were about the vineyard, there is no over reliance on vinification techniques or oak support, just pristine and lavish expressions of the Eden Valley terroir”.
Our efforts have been rewarded with James Halliday referring to the quality of our wines as ‘quite simply –outstanding’.
The People

He is always asking for tips from good mates, Neville Falkenberg the maker of the Grange and David Powell of Torbreck.

Lauren Hughes
Lauren handles the sales and marketing at Poverty Hill Wines looking after the website, newsletters, advertising and sales in Adelaide. Barossa born and breed, Lauren has recently returned home from working and travelling overseas. Lauren’s marketing background and love of wine and the Barossa meant she would always return to the industry.
4. Our Vineyards
Our wines are reflections of the care taken in our vineyards; the wines display their own distinct characteristics derived from each of the vineyards unique terroir. Our vineyards are some of the oldest in the region and we carefully select grapes from other local growers.
The Eden Valley region is synonymous with quality wines and is particularly famous for its riesling. The cool climate of the region provides ideal conditions to produce elegant reds rich with luscious ripe berry characters and whites that age gracefully famous for their zesty lime flavours and minerality.
The higher altitude of the region means growing temperatures are lower then those of the Barossa with the final stages of harvesting taking place in much cooler conditions. Harvest occurs from mid March to early May, typically 3-5 weeks later than the Barossa. Wind plays a major role restricting both growth and yield on the typically exposed hillsides.
